In the early 1970s, video games were a new and unexplored frontier. There were no rules or conventions to follow—anything was possible. It was in this wild and untamed landscape that Pong, one of the earliest and most famous video games of all time, was born.
Pong is believed to have been inspired by an earlier game called Tennis for Two, which was created in 1958 using an oscilloscope. However, the first true video game version of Pong was created by Atari engineer Allan Alcorn in 1972. The game was released in arcades in 1973 and quickly became a smash hit. By 1974, there were more than 10,000 Pong machines in operation around the world.
